Having moved to a new county, I have recently realised that friendships are based predominantly on one thing; music. I will assume that as you are reading this, you have a vague knowledge of the meaning of the word Ska. (Rhythmic music originating from Jamaica, onomatopoeically named after the syncopation of the guitar. Just a quick reminder.) Well, as you well know, I am a fan of Ska. I like to listen to it, talk about it, bathe in its entrails. As it turns out, we are a rare and dying breed. Of all of the people I have met in this new excursion from Essex to Hampshire, I have discovered no more than one other person who is aware of the Ska genre. And she plays saxophone. So she would, really.
Now, is it just me who has noticed the complete lack of Ska fans in the world? Because I am personally sick of the blank stare that each person gives me whenever I mention those 3 poor neglected letters. The sort of look I present when politics or maths or science, or generally anything challenging or academic is mentioned. As though I'm specifically trying to confuse them.
I suppose it shows how lucky you are when you manage to fall in with a Ska loving crowd. I suppose joining a Ska band helped. Maybe I should go on the hunt for a Ska band in need of a singer with no musical knowledge. I could get lucky again...
So this leads me to my next point quite nicely. Where is one to find their Ska brethren? Ska gigs I suppose...but how do you find Ska gigs? Ska is so far underground these days that you actually have to be some sort of mole person to find it; which luckily all of the SkaCast Uk crew are.
Naturally, you bright young things are getting your RDA of Ska right here. I can't help but feel that the word must be spread. Because let's face it, what's not to like? It's happy dancey music, who doesn't love that? Other than everyone in Hampshire. Which made it one hell of a lot less fun for me to run around screaming about the purchase of tickets to see The Specials*. Nobody knows who they are. Appalling. Truly. What is the world coming to? A fiery Ska-related rampage, pitchforks ahoy, headed by yours truly, that's what.
Next week- Bee Keeping Holidays; good or bad?
*NB: Tickets were not actually purchased by myself, but rather by the lovely blokes what do the pod cast. Also, it is worth mentioning that the gig is on my birthday. Happy birthday to me. Booyah.
